Understanding Biblical Church Leadership

Servant Leadership
What is “servant Leadership?”
Servant leadership definition is leading by placing the follower's or employee's needs first and the leader's needs second. What does it mean to be a servant leader? It means the leader's main focus is providing service to the followers or employees rather than traditional leadership, where the leader's main focus and responsibilities are to provide services to the business or organization. The goal of servant leadership is first and foremost to serve others as opposed to traditional leadership, where the goal is to serve themselves, the business, and the shareholders. Servant leadership and Service leadership are closely related as the service leadership definition is much like a calling to serve others and lead by example. Attributes or characteristics of servant leadership:
Active listening: Servant leaders are active listeners who listen to their followers or employees to better understand their situations and needs. The leader listens to their followers and provides constructive feedback, and asks questions to determine how best they, the leader, can serve the follower.
Empathy: Servant leaders have and use empathy to connect with their employees or followers in a way that helps them better understand the situation from the follower's perspective. By connecting with their followers' emotions in an empathetic manner, the leader can better determine how to serve them better and help them grow.
Healing: Servant leaders have the attribute of healing, not in the miracle sense but in the sense of being able to create a positive work environment for the follower or employees. By having the ability to create an overall sense of well-being, the leader can project an aura of healing within the team, organization, and followers.
Awareness: Servant leaders are keenly aware of their surroundings within the work environment and what is affecting their followers or employees. They are constantly monitoring their surroundings for anything that could negatively affect the well-being of the team, organization, or followers and are ready to react and rectify if necessary.
Persuasion: Servant leaders have the ability to use persuasion to influence their followers or employees. Unlike some traditional leadership styles that use authority, coercion, threats, or disciplinary actions to influence their employees to produce, servant leaders use the art of persuasion to influence their followers or employees to produce positively.
Foresight: Servant leaders use foresight to try and predict the direction of their organization, team, or employees and use that foresight to stop any threats or damage from occurring. By constantly communicating with their followers or employees and monitoring the well-being of all, they are able to predict and identify any acts or events that may have negative consequences.
Conceptualization: Servant leaders use the attribute of conceptualization to project their vision or goals to their employees or followers. By doing so, they effectively get their team to see the same vision as they do for the organization.
